An Adventure Awaits
Last Saturday, YWLC organised a hackathon for Social Change with a focus on empowering women in the community. Cynthia and I were proud to be part of the change-makers involved in this hackathon.
The experience for me was an amazing, humbling and inspiring one. It was a pleasure to meet all the other change-makers and to hear their different stories of the social work they do to contribute to the community. It was even more an honour to meet the participants and get to know them.
In a self-centric world, where one believes that everything in the world has to do with oneself, we start to forget about the existence of others. We start to lose sight of any good that may exist in the world, or even question the rationale when someone does good. Scepticism kicks in. This hackathon has proved otherwise. There are people out there who wants to make a change and have dedicated their careers into opportunities that create the change. There are also many others hidden away, who wants to do good and contribute, but just don’t know how and are finding ways to do so. I applaud these people and am in awe of them.
We went into the hackathon with a problem statement of
How do we increase financial empowerment for lower income mothers?
This is a problem we found so real in Singapore but yet gets little attention. Apart from raising awareness, we hoped to perhaps gain some ideas that we can adopt. However, we got more! We were so blessed to partner up with an amazing group of people – Apri, Cheryl, Min Hui and Sariza. The enthusiasm that they showed, the thought-through questions asked, the 101 ideas suggested, and needless to say the thorough hacking process blew us away. By the end of it, we not only emerged with ideas, but a full blown holistic program that is feasible enough to be rolled out. Their solution will definitely contribute and impact the community, bring about change and transformation, empowering the next generation by helping the mothers. Even sweetening our day, we won!!
Thank you the team at YWLC for organising such a brilliant event. Thank you to an awesome team. It was a long day but you ladies were amazing, bringing together a wonderful solution to our problem statement. Thank you to the judges, Ms Lynn Er, Ms Tjin Lee and Ms Cheryl Chong for believing in this. Because of all of you, Empower2free now has a winning program ready for implementation.
Watch this space as we roll out this program and bring it to life!
