Client: City of Canning (under the Canning Resilience Grants)
Challenge:
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the financial stability and independence of youths aged 18 to 24, a critical period when they begin managing their own finances and seeking part-time employment. With fewer job opportunities and reduced family income, many youths face heightened stress, frustration, and uncertainty, which negatively impacts their self-esteem and sense of identity. These challenges highlight an urgent need to equip youths with socio-emotional and financial skills to build resilience and adapt creatively to the evolving economic landscape.
Our Solution:
Delivered as a one off, one-hour online workshop for teenagers aged 16-18, we engaged participants through creative drawing and interactive discussions. Using a growth mindset framework, participants explored innovative income opportunities, gained valuable insights into their financial habits through a personality quiz, and developed practical money management skills for the “new normal.”
Post-workshop, participants accessed an interactive online platform featuring resources, activities, and peer forums, empowering them to take charge of their financial future with confidence and resilience.
Impact:
The webinar was delivered six times, reaching a total of 57 participants. Additionally, we also trained 1 educator to conduct the webinar for her school, extending the reach to 35 more students.
In total, 93 students accessed the digital platform, learning to manage money at their own pace. Many students reported an increased understanding of themselves and how it influences their money management. This boosted their confidence and engagement. Notably, 23 participants continued their learning journey, completing additional courses on managing bank accounts, budgeting, and increasing income as they approached graduation. The program received positive feedback from participants, their parents and educators.
