Challenge:
Without strong social connections and clear awareness of available support services and work rights, international students therefore risk isolation, leaving them vulnerable to wellbeing challenges and workplace exploitation. Particularly, many face barriers to building relationships, accessing vital support, and feeling a true sense of belonging in Perth. Research shows especially that limited interaction with domestic students and the broader community further deepens this isolation. Undeniably, addressing these gaps is essential to improving international students’ safety, wellbeing, and success in Western Australia.

Our Solution:
We organised a half-day event for the purpose of directly addressing the isolation and lack of support often experienced by international students. At first, participants were taken on a scavenger hunt through key locations in Perth CBD, where they were grouped with both international and local students. This experience specifically allowed them to explore the city like locals, hence helping to foster a deeper sense of belonging. Due to engaging activities during the hunt and a subsequent speed-networking session, students gained valuable knowledge about Australia’s culture, financial system, and support services, significantly increasing their awareness of available resources. These activities also simultaneously facilitated meaningful interactions between international and domestic students, bridging the social gap and reducing isolation. As a result, participants built lasting connections, gained confidence in navigating their new environment, and felt more supported in their academic and personal journeys.
Impact:
Altogether, the event engaged 25 student participants and 16 student volunteers from a diverse range of countries, including China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and more. Overall, participants came from both vocational studies and higher education institutions. The scavenger hunt and networking activities undoubtedly gave students the opportunity to explore Perth, connect with peers, and gain valuable insights into Australia’s culture, support services, and work rights. In addition to the educational outcomes, the event also highlighted key challenges faced by the students, such as a lack of awareness about work rights and difficulties in securing internships, which were raised during pre-event discussions.
Despite logistical challenges faced by the team, including fluctuating volunteer commitment and attendance, the project unquestionably succeeded in providing a space for international students to engage, connect, and learn more about Perth. As a result, students left with new connections, improved mental health, and a stronger sense of integration into their academic and social environments. The event also furthermore highlighted the importance of recognising volunteer efforts to prevent burnout, as well as the power of simple incentives, like bubble tea, to boost engagement.
